How do I answer a Mormon's Great Apostasy argument?

How do I answer a Mormon’s statement and question that during the history of the Church there was a time when something was lost and Joseph Smith was given what was lost. Is it possible that something was lost?

My daughter-in-law and I were in conversation and the conversation was good until she made the statement and asked the question. I didn’t know how to respond. That was all there was to it. Her case was proven by that alone. something could have been lost. I’m at a loss. Please help! Jane Grzegorczyk
