How do I become a Catholic apologist?

I hear some very erudite lay apologists on EWTN radio.

It seems that this is altogether a new type of vocation that lay people might want to aspire to, to help lead people to Christ in the Church.

Are there “certified” programs for becoming an apologist?

I live in a county in Michigan where a recent survey says that 2/3 of the people are unchurched (pop. c.105,000). It seems like something should be done. These people are not connected to any of 236 churches that were offered to them.
