I saw a quick blurb from Fr. John Corapi on EWTN, and he mentioned the necessity to cultivate a relationship with our guardian angel. How do you go about it?

Having not seen the program you saw, I don’t know exactly what Fr. Corapi said, but I would hesitate to encourage people to try to “cultivate” relationships with their guardian angel and I certainly wouldn’t call doing so a “necessity.” If your report of his statement is accurate, it may be an overstatement on his part.

While we are part of the communion of saints and should consider praying to them to ask their intercession and to honor them, a “relationship” with a saint or angel in this life is a gift and not something you can “cultivate” by technique. Saints such as St. Gemma Galgani and St. Pio of Pietrelcina had strong relationships with their guardian angels, but only as a result of a gratuitous gift of God.

I make this point because there is an unfortunate and dubious contemporary spiritual fad that encourages people to talk to angels (example). Catholics need to be careful to remember that our focus must be on our relationship with God. If we focus our attention on him, then he will introduce us – in his own time and by his own means – to his Mother and to his friends.
