How do I defend our belief about Mary and the Saints to Non-Catholics?

Many times I have had conversations with friends who are not Catholic who believe that we are sinning because we pray to Mary and the Saints. I am not very good in defending this belief. I’m starting to question whether they are right of my faith is right because of my confusion. Please can you clarify our beliefs regarding Mary and the Saints and give me the tools to defend our beliefs?
