How do I explain the Catholic Church's finances and Vatican's wealth?

A discussion started with a family member in regards to the financial support that the U.S. catholic churches get to survive. I stated that I thought that the churches pretty much survive with the donations from it’s members. Then the conversation switched to the vatican and the question in regards to it’s wealth. I’m always defending the vatican and the catholic churches but I really need more facts about it. Can anybody help me with this?
