How do I forgive someone who has hurt me?

I ask this in the context of the Year of Mercy; but perhaps this might apply to any other time: Someone has wronged me, not just a little, but in a very awful, hurtful way that hurt not only me but others. If I forgive them in this Year of Mercy are they still accountable for their sins? And may I still remember what was done to me in the context of dealing with this person?
