It would appear that my local catholic counseling centre is catholic in name only. I was assigned a Muslim therapist. I chose this place because I wanted counseling that is Catholic-based. I’m somewhat disappointed that I won’t be able to incorporate or talk about my faith and use of the Sacraments in how they help me with my issues. How do I get real Catholic based counseling these days?

Here in the US we have Catholic Charities, but even they aren’t necessarily 100% Catholic although you would expect that…considering the name. You can ask for a Catholic counselor at your center, or you might try seeing your parish priest for some types of counsel.

Catholic Therapists

That may not help unless you are in the US or Canada, but it’s worth a shot in case anyone is lurking.

Unfortunately I was told this person was the only one available, and is an intern. Our priests avoid dealing with any type of “mental health issues” and insist that depression is the result of pride. If we just become more humble we won’t be depressed.

Okay then…Have you seen your doctor for antidepressants? I have to ask, as someone who has had chronic depression I would not be alive and typing this response if it weren’t for medication that has helped me climb out of the black pit and keep from falling back into it.

If you are not in Canada or the US, try Googling “Catholic therapists in X” where X is your city or town. There are Catholic therapists everywhere, it’s just that they may not make that fact well-known because they want to serve a larger population, but you can find one. Price may be another consideration, but sometimes that can be negotiated.

Pity about your priests - I guess they must think people commit suicide out of pride? I agree that depression tends to close down one’s world until one is the only thing in it, but I sure don’t feel arrogant when I’m in the pit. Just the opposite in fact.

There is an organization in D.C. that may be of help.

I will look for a link to them; if you contact them, they may be able to provide a referral for you.

isnt that what priests are for ? OR talk to a nun a lot have council work or counselling qualifications these days

or ask to be assigned to a different counsiler as you feel they are not able to help you with all your needs due to religious difference
