How do I have faith?

Where do I begin on further developing my faith? Thanks, btw. 🙂
I met a man who had been homeless for about five years; he carried all his possessions in a couple of bags. He said, every night when I find somewhere to sleep; I reflect on my day, and find several things to thank God for.

I spent some time with another homeless man, he said several times, I have no worries, Jesus loves me.

The faith of both these men struck me in a profound way, why should a man with almost nothing thank God every day? How can a man with an unpredictable life and living in unsafe circumstances say; he has no worries because Jesus loves him?

If a priest living in fairly comfortable circumstances had said the same to me, it would not have had the same meaning.

When Jesus spent his time on Earth, he would have lived by the greatest commandments, he could do nothing greater. But how did Jesus hold out his hands on the cross; and love the man with the hammer and nails as he loves himself?

We know that Jesus prayed on the cross; forgive them Father for they know not what they do. To forgive someone is a noble thing to do, but how did Jesus continue to love the soldier and love each and every one of us as he loves himself?

No one can prove to me that Jesus died for me, no one can prove to me that Jesus rose from the dead; or that he loves me as he loves himself. I have to want to prove this to myself in some way, believing is not enough, I have to do something.
