How do I officially leave the Church?

I simply do not believe in the Catholic Church. While I was baptized and confirmed a Catholic, I would like to do something a little more substantial than just not attending Mass. I would be interested in a more substantial show of my lack of faith along the lines of an official resignation or self-directed excommunication. Something to hang on the wall that was signed by at least a bishop would thrill me.

Why is that? You apparently do not believe in the Church’s authority, so why would you give any credence to a bishop’s decree that you are no longer a Catholic? Why do you want the Church to officially note that you have left? I think it’s possible that your desire for formal recognition by the Church is, in itself, a recognition of the Church’s authority in your life. If that is indeed the case, perhaps you should consider carefully examining why that is.
