Hello. My beloved sister and I are both Catholic, however she doesn’t believe in Satan, fallen angels, demons or hell. She says that people who commit terrible crimes like murder are not sinning, but are mentally ill and therefore not responsible for what they do. She believes we are all born with a pure soul, which will be restored when our bodily flesh drops off at death. And then we all go to heaven to be with God, all our sins forgotten as if they never happened. It all sounds very nice, but it is clearly not Catholic–more New Age. How can I answer her? I can’t appeal to the catechism or the bible, because she is contemptuous of both as being written by “fallible men.” Her two daughters, my dear nieces, one of which is my goddaughter are calling themselves atheists. She does believe in God, but it is a starry eyed belief with no room for the possibility of an unhappy ending for souls, no matter the evil they do. Please help me help them. What do I say? Please pray for them and me.
