Don’t “explain,” at least not at the Mass. Just hand him a missalette and show him the Communion guidelines on the inside cover. It is then his responsibility to read the guidelines and follow them. Should he ask about it later, then you can explain that the Church ordinarily reserves Communion to Catholics because the reception of Communion is a visible sign of full communion with the Church.
