How do I use icons?

This is probably a stupid question, but how do I make use of an icon to strengthen my spiritual life? Do I just look at it, thinking and praying about what it represents? Do I have to look at it a certain way, focusing on certain things?
 
In [very] short, and Icon is a prayer, and is “written” with other prayers, not “drawn” or “painted.” It is fundamentally different from a religious painting.

Veneration of the ion is a way of joining in the prayer.
