Hi!

I’m fourteen and am discerning the priesthood right now. My primary example and influence was an incident in Nagasaki, Japan, in the 1500s (I believe) in which 26 people, from young boys to elderly men, were martyred for their faith. They had ties to the Jesuit Order. I read about it in a book called Jesus Freaks when I was a Protestant. It knew then my calling was mission work. Well, after reading about Saint Francis Xavier recently, I decided I wanted to make him my confirmation saint. His life and his work astounded me. What’s more, he made me want to pick up Jesus Freaks again for the first time in a while, and when I did (this being after my conversion), I remembered my calling–my first love. I already have a great love of Japanese culture and want to be able to be a Christian influence there.

All that said, I know it’s early, but I want to know: Is it possible for me to enter into the Jesuit Order with the firm intent of becoming a missionary in Japan? (In other words, not to sound arrogant, but do I get to choose where I would like to be placed–as I believe this is where God would have me, really?) If so, how do I go about this? How long is seminary and ordination? What does being in an order like this encompass, really?

I know the gist but really want details. Thanks!

I think your best bet for an accurate answer is to contact a Jesuit Society and inquire.

To be ordained a Jesuit priest, I believe it’s usually a minimum of 12 years of study. Jesuits, as I’m sure you already know, are academic priests and also evangelists in some respects.

You converted to the faith? At what age and did you go it alone?

I’m also discerning a vocation to the priesthood in the Syriac-Maronite Church, which has been in full communion with Rome since it’s formation. I’ll keep you in my prayers and keep me in yours.

May God bless you in your constant discernment.

Pace e Bene
Andrew
