I’m involved with my parish’s RCIA program and a question arose this past Sunday during our discussion of Mary’s fiat to the angel Gabriel and the Incarnation. “What do our Jewish friends think of Mary?”
Modern Judaism is similar to Protestantism in that there is no one understanding of Judaism that is binding on all Jews everywhere. Jewish thought ranges from ultra-traditional at the far right of the spectrum to atheistic on the far left. So, in short, there’s no one answer to your question on the non-Christian Jewish understanding of Mary. Although discussions of the person of Mary and her relationship with Jesus have been the subject of ancient Jewish/Christian debate, many modern Jewish scholars simply do not address the subject because they consider it a Christian issue.
