Compulsion and addiction are different things. Addiction speaks primarily about a biological weakness where as compulsion speaks primarily of a weakness of the will. So it is in the will that you must effect change in order to surmount this problem.I’m not positive I am addicted, (I’m not sure how you know) I don’t have any SA groups in my area, as I said I have done the purity coaching but my problem has been not doing what I was taught to do when tempted.
Remember this, behavior precedes disposition. If we change our actions then we change our will. On of the sure ways to change the will is with help from a person you trust. Just as when the alcoholic is tempted to drink he calls his buddy so too can you do something similar either through a tangible person or through prayer. You will not be able to fight it off every time but you will begin to make significant strides. This will also begin to help repair your damaged will and order your passions jut a bit more.
- I need to change my will, if so how do I do that?
Don’t worry about this. Focus on your will - not your brain.
- Can the brain be re-wired, if so how?
As others have said I don’t think this is necessary. Try to find a Spiritual Director if you don’t have ready access to a priest. This must be a person you trust and who you know has a profound knowledge of the faith and objective morals.
- I don’t have much money, so a counselor or some other help will be a problem.
This is the normal process so know that you are not alone in this struggle. Many guys are bouncing back and forth in this same struggle and this same cycle. But be assured that it can be beaten.
- I have periods where I want purity, my longest period of purity this year was 38 days (that’s actually good for me), I normally can stay pure for 7 or 8 days but after that the old habits come back and I usually don’t notice until I’m already in a state of sin. The moving back and forth, in and out of sin is taking a toll on me. Once I do fall into a state of sin, I needlessly put off Confession (another sin) and free fall until Confession on Saturday.
This is the war between the flesh and the spirit that St. Paul spoke of. Remember that he said:
- I know what I’m supposed to do, why can’t I get myself to do it?
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practise; but what I hate, that I do. But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good. So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me. For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not. For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise. But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me. I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I myself with the mind serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
(Rom 7:14-25)
This always sounded to me like the rantings of a madman and then I realized that this mad ranting is the mad ranting of every man who struggles against the flesh. So, instead of ranting I realized that it was mourning - mourning that he could not have the purity that he desired but that he would continue to strive in Christ Jesus for that purity even though it seems futile. The the point is not about winning but rather the point is that we must know that we are striving after perfection in all things.
