Most of us are often encouraged to pray for vocations. When we pray for an increase in vocations are we praying that God will call more people to these vocations, or are we praying that more people will have the courage to respond. Does God call the same amount of people to the religious life or priesthood now as he would have 100 years ago? Or is the problem the lack of response to his call? Thanks in advance for all of your advice!

Man these are great payers, thank you! So you do believe that we can pray for a literal increase in persons being called by God? We don’t just pray that the people who are called will respond? Thank you for your help!

Serran Prayer for Vocations (Serra International is an organizations of laypeople who form local clubs that work with their bishops, dioceses and religious vocation directors to encourage and support vocations to the priesthood and to the religious life. serrainternational.org)

O God, Who wills not the death of a sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, grant we beseech You through the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, Saint Joseph, her spouse, Saint Junipero Serra, and all the saints, an increase of labourers for your Church, fellow labourers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls, through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Perseverance of Vocations

O God, You have constituted Your only-begotten Son supreme and eternal Priest for the glory of Your majesty and the salvation of mankind: grant that those whom He has chosen ministers and dispensers of his mysteries may be found faithful in fulfilling the ministry they have received.

Lord, the harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. We pray to you to send new labourers for this harvest of souls. Good shepherds worthy of being entrusted with the care of souls. Amen.

You can also say the rosary and have as your intention vocations and an increase in them. I also pray for those discerning and those in formation and training etc.

The late Mother Angelica said one has to be precise with what is requested. That being said, we need to not only pray for Vocations in general, but from our parish and families, in particular.

My particular Ministry does the following:

Novenas to:

The Holy Ghost for all discerners

St Agnes of Montepulchiano, OP, to sow the seeds of Vocations in young hearts

St Therese the Little Flower, for young adult Vocations.

St Rita of Cascia, for delayed Vocations.

St Leopold Mandic for disabled Vocations.

I also pack our particular version of the rosary full of vocational intentions, based on the mysteries. I remember, first and foremost, the cloisters and emerging communities.

My morning offering, and offering of the pure heartbeats of sleep, are offered for the increase and sanctification of the cloisters and new charisms.

During the regular Angelus, I pray for Vocations, and the conversion of the church’s enemies, “May her yes be theirs!”

I think I’ve covered most of the devotions.

Blessings,
Mrs Cloisters, O.P.
