How do we visit the imprisoned?

We’re to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, comfort the sick, and visit the imprisoned. Can you please suggest a practical and safe way to contribute to this call? Is there some place we can send cards or uplifting messages? What are we to do exactly, or does this apply to family members being called to visit their imprisoned relatives?

If you do not have an imprisoned relative (whom you should indeed visit if possible), one way to “visit the imprisoned” would be to support with time, talent, and/or treasure the prison ministries in your diocese, thereby enabling those trained to do so to provide prisoners with the support they need. You can also purchase subscriptions to good Catholic magazines for prisoners. Catholic Answers’ magazine This Rock, for example, is sent to needy prisoners and donations make such contributions possible.
