How do you celebrate First Holy Communion?

My oldest son will receive his First Holy Communion (FHC) this May. I have heard a lot of conflicting information about celebration of his FHC. I had planned to celebrate with a reception for my household and our extended family. I was told that it is inappropriate to hold such a celebration because FHC is such a personal event and there should be no “gaudy afterparties.” I have never heard of such a thing; then again I am a new-ish Catholic and I hope that you will guide me in the right direction so I don’t make a faux pas.
 
At the risk of sounding unhelpful, how you celebrate a First Holy Communion is up to you. I would only recommend leaving off of the guest list anyone who has remarked to you that a festive celebration of an important sacramental milestone for your son that includes immediate and extended family must be a “gaudy afterparty.”
