I have a dear friend that is a great guy. But he is a horrible compulsive liar and has been making up stories for a long time. Over time the stories have gotten more and more ludicrous. He has gone from saying things such as he is inheriting $40 million dollars to lying and saying that a friend of his died. That suddenly the friend didn’t die and that the friend had done it to “find” himself. I am getting to the point where I can’t deal with him and listen to this nonsense much anymore. Should I address this with him or just let him go on with these stories knowing that he is crazy?

If you think your friend would be receptive to help for this problem, you might put him in touch with the Pastoral Solutions Institute, a Catholic counseling apostolate. If not, I recommend distancing yourself from him and allowing the relationship to go cold. If he is ever to be receptive to the proper help for his problem, he needs to experience the consequences of his actions – one of which would be the loss of friendships by making trust impossible.
