How do you decide what movies to let your children watch?

I’d like to begin a discussion here on family movie viewing. There seem to be quite a variety of opinions among good Catholic/Christian families. We are very picky but sometimes wander if we are being too restrictive.

My husband & I are rather particular about which movies our children (girls between 5-10 years) are allowed to watch. We go by the descent films K (Kids & Family) rating & USCCB A1 (for all audiences) ratings. Therefore, our children end up watching only G rated movies (and not all G movies at that) unless it’s a movie with a message that we feel outways the negative aspects of that movies (i.e. We watched Super Size Me and, believe me, my kids opinion of fast food has changed).

We have Catholic friends who allow their children to watch all kinds of movies; they just have to close their eyes during certain scenes. Even their 3 year old is present at movies including violence, sassy kids, sexy scenes, etc.

So what’s your opinion? How old are your children? What types of movies are they allowed to watch? Why?

Let’s keep it friendly guys!

We use www.movieguide.org for reviews. I ask around and some movies - like Disney (unfortunatly) we veto even if they are rated G - example Brother Bear which was totally about reincarnation. My older kids 13, 9, 6 can see some PG depending on why it’s rated that. Mostly we say no. We belong to Netflicks and we’ve been renting the entire Little House on the Prarie Series. We watch one or two episodes a weekend - we’re on season 5. My kids love it.

Tell us a little more about Netflicks. Thanks for your response & the movieguide link.

carol marie, we love LHOP too!! We just finished Season 4.

My kids are 11,9, and 5 years old. I look up movies at the USSBC for a blow by blow of content. Then, I look at the story line before making my decision. Some G rated movies I would not let my kids see, while some PG I would be okay with. Absolutely no PG-13 movies period. That makes it easy to say no to friends who want to invite my kids to movies rated PG-13.

Have you gotten to Mary going blind yet??? That really freaked my girls out who “play” LHOTP and fight over who gets to be Mary!

God Bless, CM

Oh yes!!! That one is so sad. My kids kept asking me if she was just pretending or could she have some surgery to get her eyes fixed. I told them in “those days” people didn’t have surgeries to fix things as easily as they do today. Those LHOP shows have a lot of good lessons on virtue and the kids are SOOOOOO obedient to Ma and Pa.

God Bless
