Apparantly your memory of history and your reading materials is highly selective.
i am least interested in the past or in the future, but only in the present and only since joining this site 1.5 months back, i have been given the great mission of protecting Jesus’ little ones from the horrific evil unleashed on them by shepherds who are ‘wolves in sheeps’ clothing’…

it is a virtually immpossility to do so in a site that protects the unveiled, visible Evil within the invisible walls of the C, for fear of being banned, but i shall make every endeavour to fulfil my mission in other secular sites and in my own country and am confident that i shall succeed because it is your God, Jesus Christ, who has chosen me to fulfill his will by manifesting the Truth, wherever I go , fearlessly…lol… thanks to YOUR catholic church which is iniversally open to all, but i am not obligated to worship your pop., but only Jesus Christ, or whoever is God, who has chosen me, and who will reveal himself to me on my or the last day!

my occupation or vocation is not a presbyter, and thankfully so!

LOL… not ignorant, just curious what you’re referring to…

Details, please, or else it’s just all hearsay… 😉
if you are curious you have to do your home-work…your defend the indefensible, knowing fully well your unrighteousness and shall reap the bitter fruit of your labours…nevertheless you labour in vain!

it is amusing you are the only one who is ignorant, when you realize the TRUTH of my statements and are unable to defend it…try finding out why pjp2 took the sins of all his predecessors upon his shoulders and knelt and wept for mercy from the whole world, which act is similiar to Jesus’ who took the sins of the whole world on his shoulders and enabled every one to enter heaven!-- in the process he admitted (implied) to the TRUTH that many popes were great sinners and of very low morality and abused their authority of papacy by taking undue or illegal advantage of the myth of infallibility, which is evident to many, but unfortunately not to you…

IN THIS RESPECT , BUT NOT IN ANY OTHER, PJP2 FULLY DESERVES SAINT-HOOD, FOR HE EXPOSED THE QUESTIONABLE OR DEBATABLE DOCTRINES, THAT WERE USED TO MANIPULATE OR EVEN MAKE SUBSERVIENT THE MAJORITY OF THE FAITHFUL, FOR WHOM THE SO CALLED CHURCH IS RESPONSIBLE AND WOULD HAVE TO SERVE JUST AS JESUS DID BY STOOPING TO WASH THEIR FEET!!!

I think that post vat 2, the laity are empowered & authorised to fulfil their mission of proclaiming Jesus the world over, and thanks are due to pj23 for being the one who initiated it; in the process he has ‘awakened a sleeping giant’ as the japs. put it ; it has been pointed out in a cath, mag. that the last 5 or so, popes have been of impeccable character, but not so many of their predecessors…I hope that the pius of world war 2 fame, had not been elevated to saint-hood for his invaluable contribution to the ‘divine’ Powers of his loving and lovable hitler!

Are you refering to the quote from Padre Pio?

The topic is “how do you defend papal infallibility.”
The topic is “how do you defend papal infallibility.”

Infallibility can never be defended nor was it intended to be, both by Jesus and by his Church…because it is a weapon that can be and had been and will be used to enslave or marginalize the meek, humble and poor, who are most dear to JESUS! - don’t expect me to give you full details of the sins of your pops. over more than 2000 years…search/SEEK and you shall find - Jesus…LOL…it would take an eternity for me to list or record the sins of your pops…

Not at all. I just want to know what you’re referring to, in particular, so that I might know what you’re suggesting I defend. 😉

OK… let’s take a look at what you’ve just asserted.
  • Pope John Paul II admitted that we all are sinners, including all of us in the Church, whether in positions of authority or not. That’s not news – we are all sinners.
  • “many popes were great sinners”? Well… that’s your own assertion. However, remove the word ‘great’, and we’re still on the same page…
  • “many popes… abused their authority of papacy”? No, that wasn’t part of what John Paul II did! You’re starting to take a historical fact and weave a story around it…
  • “many popes… abused their authority… by taking undue or illegal advantage of the myth of infallibility”. Umm… pardon? Tell ya what – if you can substantiate this claim, then I’ll engage in discussion with you about it. If you cannot do so, then it’s simply a wild claim that has no substance to it.
However, you seem to be equating the notion of “impeccability” (i.e., sinlessness) with “infallibility”. As has been mentioned many times here – these two are not the same thing!. When the Catholic Church says that the Pope is infallible, it does not mean that the pope is without sin!!!

Now, just for my sake: would you please acknowledge – so that I know you’re not misunderstanding – that “sinlessness” is not what the Church asserts when it proposes papal infallibility? Please? Pretty please? With a cherry on top? 😉
I hope that the pius of world war 2 fame, had not been elevated to saint-hood for his invaluable contribution to the ‘divine’ Powers of his loving and lovable hitler!
:doh2:

This whopper has been disproved time and again. I encourage you to check out “The Myth of Hitler’s Pope”. If you’re having a hard time comprehending that Pius wasn’t in Hitler’s hip pocket, then there’s little left to discuss… :sad_yes:

I was trying to muddle through this one, the other day. What I found was a series of conflicting views over time, as to when the pope is infallible, and when he is not.

I have read a statement just recently, by an avowed catholic in a thread here, that the pope was simply unqualified to make a particular moral judgement that he made. The reference was to the condemnation by JP2 of the Iraq invasion (OIF1). I was surprised to read that. My sense was that any moral pronouncement by the pope is taken at face value by the faithful.

Apparently, there is a more critical process at work. I posed this question differently in another thread. I don’t want to be disrespectful, and such a directly worded question could be seen that way. But I do wonder… How does a Catholic know, when the Church is right, and when it is wrong? Surely, the actions of individuals on behalf of the Church have not always been “right” through history. This is to be expected with such a large institution, having endured for so long.

When does a well formed conscience come into play for a Catholic seeking guidance from his or her Church? When is individual interpretation allowed or encouraged, and when is it discouraged?
the majority of the faithful are ‘illiterate’ when it comes to church doctines, actions, encyclicals, etc., or are just disinterested as to the politics, power-lust, etc. in a foreign country, in some distant continent, when making both ends meet itself is a life-time problem…and when unimaginable power is given to one person, absolute corruption is the end result!

the main confusion that baffles all and sundry is due to the fact that the decisions/pronouncements of the pope relate to his authority as both church head and political head, and one cannot know, except the minority, when he is speaking what, in which capacity and the faithul are obligated to just follow like confused sheep!

you make some intelligent questions that would make this infallibility myth just what it is, if you try to understand regarding CONSCIENCE and its UNEQUIVOCAL, SUPREME, ULTIMATE AUTHORITY OR ‘COURT OF JUSTICE’ over any papal verdict, that in the wrong hands could -or actually did- assume extreme TOTALITARIAN DIMENSIONS, as we have seen during critical turning-points in HISTORY!..that claimed thousands or millions of innocent lives during the course of history…2012 years!

your post contains the key to identifying i-f as meaningless and cannot be defended and is totally unjustified, wrong and unwarranted…

fyi and better understanding, i forward the relevant rule/clause that is or should be in the ccc, and is quoted in the words of the German Pope Benedict the 16th :

This emphasis on the individual, whose conscience confronts him with a supreme and ultimate tribunal, and one which in the last resort is beyond the claim of extemal social groups, even of the official Church, also establishes a principle: in opposition to increasing totalitarianism." the above rule, relatively unknown to a majority - possibly 90 % - of the FAITHFUL, is the KEY that explodes the myth of infallibility…or negates/nullifies/invalidates the universality of the said doctrine…

i have heard that the end of the world is imminent and the anti-christ was, is or will be here…

if he is here, surely he must have a home…

anyone, pray tell me, which is truly the home of the ANTI-CHRIST?..so that all of God’s people can avoid him like the plague!

if this appears unrelated to the ot, a new thread or split thread may be CREATED!

Quite the contrary, it seems there’s quite an interest and deliberate using of things you say you’re not interested in.

  1. *]Tarring the Catholic Church by selectively picking from history certain sinners within her ranks that were / are bad representatives, is like tarring all the apostles because 1 was a traitor. The argument falls flat.
*]When you say “it is your God Jesus Christ” then you say "only Jesus Christ, or whoever is God" in your phrasing, are you conflicted who Jesus is, or who God is?

The topic again is, “How do you defend Papal Infallibility”

The doctrine of papal infallibility is defined very specifically.

  1. *
    • we teach and define as a divinely revealed dogma that
    • when the Roman pontiff speaks EX CATHEDRA,
    • that is, when,
      1. in the exercise of his office as shepherd and teacher of all Christians,
      2. in virtue of his supreme apostolic authority,
      3. he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole church,
      4. he possesses,
      5. by the divine assistance promised to him in blessed Peter,
      6. that infallibility which the divine Redeemer willed his church to enjoy in defining doctrine concerning faith or morals.
      7. Therefore, such definitions of the Roman pontiff are of themselves, and not by the consent of the church, irreformable.
      papalencyclicals.net/Councils/ecum20.htm

The key elements are “he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole church,”

If a doctrine isn’t being defined, or the subject isn’t on faith and morals, or the whole Church isn’t involved, then the issue of infallibility isn’t an issue

How do you defend Papal Infallibility when someone brings up the fact that it wasn’t considered dogma until 1870?
Dogma is a reaffirmation of an already existing doctrine. A dogma is NOT an invention of a new doctrine. It is a reaffirmation of a doctrine that was disputed, questioned and discussed during the Council of Bishops. When a doctrine becomes a dogma, it means the dispute over the doctrine has been discussed and settled and may not be questioned again. Papal infallibility was taught and believed during the first days of the Church, during 2nd, 3rd and 4th century etc and never been questioned until the 1800’s. Vatican council of Bishops reexamined the doctrine and reaffirmed it by defining its name as “Papal infallibility”. This was when it became dogmatic in 1870.👍

I request your help: i figured the best way to substantiate this assertion would be to review the historical documentation during the 2nd-4th centuries plainly showing the Church’s support of the doctrine. Can you (or someone reading this post) direct me to the references?

Thanks

First, remember that Papal infallibility is derived from Christ’s very own words to Peter "“all that you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven” (Mt. 18:18)

We have writings from the 1st and 2nd centuries and many many others that support the Infallibility of the Pope (seat of Peter). I will provide you with just a few quotes below:
  1. Pope. St. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage in 256 A.D. wrote “Would the heretics dare to come to the very seat of Peter whence apostolic faith is derived and whither no errors can come?”
Also he wrote: "the Lord says to Peter; ’I say to you,’ he says, ‘that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not overcome it. And to you I will give the keys of the kingdom of Heaven; and whatever things you bind on earth shall be bound also in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth, they shall be loosed also in heaven’ [Matt 16:18-19])…On him [Peter] he builds the Church, and to him he gives the command to feed the sheep [John 21:17], and although he assigns a like power to all the apostles, yet he founded a single chair [cathedra], and he established by his own authority a source and an intrinsic reason for that unity. Indeed, the others were also what Peter was *, but a primacy is given to Peter, whereby it is made clear that there is but one Church and one chair. So too, all [the apostles] are shepherds, and the flock is shown to be one, fed by all the apostles in single-minded accord. If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he [should] desert the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built can he still be confident that he is in the Church? (The Unity of the Catholic Church 4; 1st edition [A.D. 251]).
  1. In 417, St. Augustine at Carthage preached against Pelagianism reflecting this same Tradition by when he said at , “Rome has spoken; the cause is concluded.”
Earlier writings by him inlcudes:

“Number the bishops from the see of Peter itself. And in that order of Fathers see who succeeded whom, That is the rock against which the gates of hell do not prevail.”
Psalmus contra partem Donati, 18 (A.D. 393)

and

“Let us not listen to those who deny that the Church of God is able to forgive all sins. They are wretched indeed, because they do not recognize in Peter the rock and they refuse to believe that the keys of heaven, lost from their own hands, have been given to the Church.”
Christian Combat, 31:33(A.D. 397)

There are many sources that Papal Infallibility has been a Tradition before it became a dogma. However, it was not clearly understood until properly defined in 1870.
