How do you explain indulgences to non Catholics?

Hasn’t there been abuses in Catholic history of indulgences ? I’m not sure if I understand what it means and how to explain it to my evangelical non catholic friends and family. I’m a catholic convert for 11 yrs now and this topic makes me mute.
