How do you honor difficult parents?

How do you honor parents who are difficult and very ugly and condescending to their adult child and the child’s spouse? Are you still honoring them by staying away from them and sending any well wishes for holidays and important dates through mail? What if there are grandchildren involved?
 
Honoring one’s parents does not mean that one must be a doormat or tolerate disrespect toward one’s spouse. However, since it is impossible for me to assess the severity of the problem and offer advice based on the information given, I recommend the book linked below. It is written by a Catholic psychotherapist and discusses how to deal with difficult people in an authentic Christian manner.
