How do you know where a temptation comes from?

If a person is being tempted to commit a mortal sin, how do they know if they are being tempted through their own thoughts or if it is from the devil? Thanks
 
I’m not sure why it would matter what the source of temptation. It’s to be avoided regardless of the source. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the question.

Yes it is to be avoided but when a person has thoughts of temptation to commit a mortal sin how can one know if the thoughts are derived from the devil or just something that your thinking on your own? Is the devil accountable for thoughts of mortal temptations? Thank you!
