Do you send a check to your favorite Catholic charity, put money in Salvation Army pots, help out at soup kitchens; hand out small (or large) bills to strangers?
I usually do giving tree, make donations to churches and participate in Giving Tuesday donation stuff. Also this year I’m trying to reach out to people who may be lonely or have suffered loss of a loved one.
I rarely hand out money to strangers. Last time I did this without thinking (had just come from church) it turned out to be a scam. Well dressed guy said he needed gas money, then I saw him hit up three people after me and leave the gas station with no car and no gas can. Won’t fall for that stuff again.
I am trying to be friendlier than usual, and I am usually on the “shy” side. I have had conversations in the grocery store with the elderly or anyone that looks like they need a smile or a kind word. I give to Salvation Army kettles and church run donations. I am helping to decorate our church this year and I clean our church with others once a week.
A couple of charitable donations, there go my merits!
The biggest act of charity I’m doing this year is by having someone share my Christmas Day who is fractious and who would stretch the patience of Job, literally. I wasn’t going to but then I think my angel reminded me of Jesus, of His birth and the birth of Christianity and said “Lee1, shun evil, do only good.” I like my angel a lot and he’s right.
Helping support the holiday food baskets drive. Usually take a couple of tree angel tags, 1 boy and 1 girl. Might drop some small cash in the red kettle a couple of times. I think I only did it twice this season.
This year has been very special for us with the arrival of grand twins. We’ve been helping our son and his wife a great deal. We also regularly give to food banks, a shelter our church supports, do the angel tree, and give to Catholic Charities. We also bring poinsettias and Christmas cards to some shut ins from our church. My wife and I don’t exchange gifts anymore.
