Hi Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Happy 2020!

May I ask how do you pray everyday? Do you have specific prayers althroughout your day?
I am scrupulous and have intrusive thoughts, can you suggest any prayer structure which would not feed my OCD? I will try to restructure my prayer life this year and would want to really get closer to Him through prayer as I want to discern my vocation. Every reply is much appreciated.

Thank you and God Bless!

One suggestion I have is from the Eastern Christian Tradition.

Just repeat the Jesus Prayer:

Jesus Christ, Son of the living God; have mercy on me, a sinner.

Breathe the Prayer and say it in the heart and from the heart. Let the mind go and center yourself on your heart.

Focus your mind on it and when your intrusive thoughts come up; chase them away with the Jesus Prayer.

Dóminus Vobíscum!

Hello! As one who suffers extreme OCD, I find the Holy Rosary to be indispensable against intrusive thoughts and anxiety. The Breviary is awesome as well. I recommend the Servite Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet and Chaplet of St.Michael. Hope it helps!

Happy New Year !

Here is a pdf download of With God, a prayer book by Fr F.X. Lasance.

Prayers and devotions galore. The Eucharistic Rosary is one of my favorites you will find there.

Here is another good book by Saint Alphonsus. A pdf file as well.

Happy new year to you as well! 😀

I pray for my family members because they’re not christians and I want them to be saved. It breaks my heart to imagine them suffering in Hell, so I pray for them often. I probably pray for that more than anything else. I am a regular poster in the Prayer Intentions part of this forum,. What the Lord put on my heart was to pray out loud for each prayer. I don’t know why God asked me to do that, but I do it anyway.

I sometimes pray in tongues. I consider myself a pentecostal, so I believe that the gifts of the Spirit, found in 1 Corinthians 12 & 14, are still active. I don’t know what I’m saying when I’m praying in tongues, but God knows. The Holy Spirit that flows through me puts those syllables into my mouth and I speak them. I don’t control what I say, but I do control the vocalization of it. It’s like the Holy Spirit is using me as His microphone.

I do the same for my family even though they are protestant Christians, I pray for them to come home to the faith someday even if it’s not in this life.

I didn’t used to pray, or only in very haphazard manner. I realize I do well on structure, so devised a plan for life where my day is structured around prayer and it really helps. I also got a book called The Better Part by John Bartunek. It’s a wonderful breakdown of the 4 gospels with meditation and questions, so I do one of those every day without fail.

So my typical day goes as follows:-
6 am Angelus, morning offering
1 chapter of The Better Part
1 Rosary
12 noon Angelus
15 Prayers of Saint Bridget
3pm Prayer and divine Mercy Chaplet, at some point, nice cup of tea while 20 minutes reading a spiritual book
6 pm Angelus
Bed time, evening prayer and examination of conscience.
While out walking my dog I might say the 15 prayers of Saint Bridget or the Rosary, and/or meditate, as I don’t have time to sit in quiet contemplation as I would like! And I’m trying more and more to speak to God during the day, like if something annoying happens. I’m finding the spiritual reading to actually be of more help than I anticipated, so am trying to do that more, and more mindfully. Actually my dog is a huge help spiritually.
Blessings on your journey, hope this helps x

The rosary is a prayer I think is built for anyone. Like any other personal devotion, you can pray as much or as little of it as possible. I pray it all “at once” (it takes me up to an hour these days to pray it), and I’ve gained some great spiritual insights from meditating on the mysteries, particularly this past year.

I also picked up the Holy Spirit chaplet a month and a half ago after my pastor recommended, as my penance, that I pray to Him for the gift of prudence. The chaplet is how I’m trying to get closer to Him in general.

I used to pray the liturgy of the hours, but after being invested in the brown scapular, I’ve been praying the Little Office instead. It doesn’t take as much time, and has helped me to grow closer to Mary while learning about what the early Church fathers had to say about her.

The Church has a vast treasury of prayers spanning from the time of the Patriarchs. You’ll have no trouble finding something that’ll help you grow closer to Him.

God wants to build a relationship with you and the best way of doing this is by regular prayer and the sacraments. The more you pray the closer you and god become and can hear what our lord is asking you to do.

As a kid, I mainly recited prayers learned by rote. As an adult, I tend to be more conversational.
