How Do You Read the Catechism?

Thanks to everyone for their replies!

My next question is how you read it along with scripture? For example, my Bible study group is focusing on Colossians 3:12-14 “Therefore, clothe yourselves like the elect of God: holy and beloved, with hearts of mercy, kindness, humility, modesty, and patience. Support on another, and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive one another. For just as the Lord has forgiven you, so also must you do. And above all these things have charity, which is the bond of perfection.” (Catholic Public Domain Version - one of only two Catholic Bible version on my YouVersion app - ugh)

So how would I use the CCC along with this scripture? Focus on the word kindness and check the table of contents to see if there’s a CCC topic on it? I’m not understanding how you use scripture as a reference with the CCC.

Yes, sometimes it seems like you need a degree in Theology to decipher the footnotes. And even after you figure it out, finding the actual primary source can be challenging.
I think the Vatican (or even the USCCB) should invest in an online, searchable, user-friendly, intratext version of the Catechism. The kind where you can click on a footnote and be taken immediately to the primary source. I know Harmony Media’s “Welcome to the Catholic Church” software attempted something close to this, but they didn’t have all the primary sources available to link to. With the emphasis on the Catechism for the upcoming Year of Faith, maybe something like this is in the works.
You all need to check out this product from Logos Bible Software: scripturestudysoftware.com/catechism/

It is exactly what you are talking about and looking for. It’s so easy and it includes nearly all the footnotes and reference texts in the Software.

I don’t need to explain it any more because it is exactly what Joe described above.

You can also just order the catechism and whatever individual resources you want, if $50 is too much. But for all the resources included, it’s really a steal.

God Bless!

Your Catechism should have an Index of Citations in the back. That is exactly what this index is, a tool to find teachings about or references to specific biblical verses in the Catechism.

Have a look at the online Catechsim at USCCB website here. It’s actually a pretty slick online app. If you scoll all the way down in the Table of Contents on the left, there is an ***Index of Citations ***at the bottom. I just noticed however, that it only goes from Genesis through the Gospel of Luke. I sent them an email about it.

There was a short thread here on CAF asking if there was an another index of citations online. forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=576300. I’d be interested to know if there is another online. Does the Vatican website have it?

I just looked in my hard copy. Colossians 3:10 references CCC 2809. Colossians 3:14 refeences CCC 815,1827, 1844.

Poking around in the online version, I just saw the following in the copyright notice.

The Holy See reserves all rights to itself.

Funny. 😃

Hmm. Looks like I may have an abbreviated version as my CCC only has a subject index. Thanks for the tip, though! I think I’ll head to our local bookstore and see if I can’t get a more complete/updated version!

That’s why I recommended the big green version. 😉 The only pocket version that has all the indices is published by St. Pauls in Australia and costs about $50 US. Most people don’t want to go that route. :o

That’s the version Logos has, with the Index of Citations. I feel like my last post just got ignored…

There’s a great informational video on their site.

They have a cheap “big green version” or a Catechism Collection that comes with Vatican I & II, Sources of Catholic Dogma, Documents from the Council of Trent, the Lectionary and two Bibles. (and you can get the resource for mobile, too. This just in.)

Made the Catechism much more accessible and informational for me. (Although I admit this discussion has helped direct my study. The software just facilitates and simplifies it.)

I especially appreciate the structural insight regarding Acts 2:42.

You’re right, I totally missed your post. Mea culpa. :o I had not heard of that software before. Thanks for letting us know about it. It sounds great. 👍

EDIT: It looks similar to the Faith Database, except the Faith Database doesn’t include the Catechism. I may have to pick that up…
