How do you respond?

This is not a question for any specific poster, but it is one that I have often wondered. If you are a member of a church that spun off from another church because one group got mad at another over something that is not doctrinal, how do you answer? If your church started in 2007 when Brother John Doe and others got upset that the people at such and such first holier than thou church did not approve of the new rec center, You can see that your church has no connection with the early church.

I know of several churches in Alabama that started on a political split. How can you justify this? As a side topic, how can Southern Baptists, and other southern denominations, claim to be representative of the faith of Christ when they broke from larger bodies due to the insistance that slavery was a God-given right?

Hmm…Interesting.

I am converting to Catholicism (waiting on hubby to plead for an anullment so I can be confirmed). I have reflected back on my days as a Methodist, and to tell you the truth, I have no idea how I justified it. I am mortified that I chose to belong to a church that was founded by man, and not Christ himself. Can I justify it? Nope.

Families argue and families split and grow to move into different areas.

Churches should not split over personal differences.

First, I had no intention of mocking anyone. I wanted to use an extreme case so that no denomination would be identified. The Great Schism included a doctrinal issus as well as political/geographic one.
What about the second question? Do you not think it is difficult to remain in a denomination that started as a defence of slavery?

Don’t know. I am not a member of one.

What do you think considering your position in the RCC? Surely you are aware of the great skeletons your church has in her past too.

I would be if someone did not understand that even if a person is Catholic (or anything else) they are still a sinner and will, from time to time fall. I think that what bothers me is to here someone saying that they know that their church is the true church but not acknowledge that it only exists because someone in the past felt it was his God-given right to own slaves or because a member got upset about something and split the church. Jesus prayed that we would be one has He and the Father are one. We just seem to want it our way only.
