When you tithe, do you give that 10% of your income directly to Church or can you give it to some Catholic Charity or maybe to someone who is in need of that money?

Personally, the majority of my tithe goes to my Catholic parish, I also donate to different Catholic charities and missions, some even to Prostestant organization. I believe our primary obligation is our local parish, after that, wherever I feel the need and wherever the blessings come, my tithe points to that direction.

Actually, on the top of tithe, we could also do offerings. Tithe is the basic 10%, offering is above the tithe.

However, Catholic church does not require 10% of our personal income. Stewardship also includes our time, talents and services. God likes a cheerful giver.
Hope this helps.

Sadly on average Catholics give substantially below the 10% number, probably closer to 3% (or even less by some accounts). One survey (about 10 years ago - haven’t seen any recent ones) had us giving the lowest compared to all other Christian denominations (Momons were highest at 13%).

Only recently has “stewartship” become a major topic. I think because of the middle ages abuses of indulgences the Church has shied away from asking for specific monetary donations or percentages.

I give at work (CFC ) and regularly at Church, almost 50-50 split and I give randomly when I encounter a charity which is worthwhile. I agree with the idea that God will always be much more generous than we can ever be. God gave us everything we have and I believe we have a responsiblity to give something back to others either to the Church, local or other charites, or volunteer service or whatever.

I don’t have specific goal or limit to my charity. I give what I can and I hope that is enough. My ambition in life is to be a full time philanthropist, the only problem is I have to work to make ends meet and pay the bills… maybe after I retire.

We have a responsibility to support our Church and we have a responsibility to help the poor and less fortunate. How you cut the pie should not matter. As far as I know, the Church has not put anything out on what our priorities should be, except to say God should always be first among everything…

My dh & I tithe 10%. Five % goes to our parish and the other 5% is divided among several charities, EWTN, a school for Indian children, a crisis pregnancy center. We just dropped one of our regular charities because we got too much junk in the mail from them. We don’t want our money going for premiums.

Peace,
Linda

My pastor asks for 5% for the Church’s needs, and the rest I give to charities of my choosing.
