Sadly on average Catholics give substantially below the 10% number, probably closer to 3% (or even less by some accounts). One survey (about 10 years ago - haven’t seen any recent ones) had us giving the lowest compared to all other Christian denominations (Momons were highest at 13%).
Only recently has “stewartship” become a major topic. I think because of the middle ages abuses of indulgences the Church has shied away from asking for specific monetary donations or percentages.
I give at work (CFC ) and regularly at Church, almost 50-50 split and I give randomly when I encounter a charity which is worthwhile. I agree with the idea that God will always be much more generous than we can ever be. God gave us everything we have and I believe we have a responsiblity to give something back to others either to the Church, local or other charites, or volunteer service or whatever.
I don’t have specific goal or limit to my charity. I give what I can and I hope that is enough. My ambition in life is to be a full time philanthropist, the only problem is I have to work to make ends meet and pay the bills… maybe after I retire.
We have a responsibility to support our Church and we have a responsibility to help the poor and less fortunate. How you cut the pie should not matter. As far as I know, the Church has not put anything out on what our priorities should be, except to say God should always be first among everything…
