I was wondering how a hermit would live, receive the sacraments like the Holy Eucharist and confession?

I hope you don’t mind but I moved your thread to spirituality … the prayer forum is just for prayers and I think you will get a good response here. God Bless

But how would they go to daily mass if they, let’s say are living in a cave or something I’m not sure?

I imagine others will chime in with more specific references/evidence, but my recollection of what nuns told me about hermits, is that they actually usually live near community. Just not ‘in’ community in the same way that monastics do.

Your typical hermit will probably live as close to a priest (for access to Mass and Reconciliation) as your typical apartment dweller. I’d imagine a significant factor in determining a hermit’s location is access to such necessary things.

My guess.

I don’t think caves are in vogue at the moment.

St Athanasius wrote in his biography of St Antony of Egypt (among the earliest examples of a hermit in the Church) that the monks living as hermits would gather for the celebration of the Eucharist. People also loved to come to St Antony in the desert for spiritual counsel.

A hermit isn’t literally 100% isolated but they do have a very atypical lifestyle.

My country’s patron saint, St. Nicholas of Flue, comes to mind.

He had support enough to build a chapel and help give subsidies to a priest who came by daily to say Mass.

He’s said to have lived during 20 years consuming nothing but the Eucharist.

I know of a Protestant hermit in France. He’s an ordained minister so he celebrates himself. Like many hermits though, he wasn’t really living alone, if only because his charism and wisdom drew many people to him. He’s now old and decided to ask for the hospitality of a monastery which lets him mostly live alone on their grounds while keeping an eye on him, because the constant crowd was getting too much for him.

I once heard that some saints (hermits) received Eucharist even only once in their life time. I have no idea if that is true (EDIT: of course I am talking about early Church, first centuries I guess)
