How does one answer a non-Catholic on the issue of calling no man "Father" as found in Matt 23:9?

I was recently floored by the passage of Matt 23, 9 where it is stated that we must call no one on earth our father, as we have but one father in heaven. The discussion lends itself more to members of the clergy and not biological fathers, but I still can find no justification for calling priests ‘father’? It seems the answer should be fairly straightforward, but I cant seem to find it anywhere.
