How does one give up everything to follow Christ?

I’m pretty confused when I hear this statement

Does this mean giving up all our hobbies, everything fun, to follow Christ?
 
Giving up everything to follow Christ means to put God first in our lives. We can have our hobbies, but they would never over take our time spending with God. Our primary focus day in and day out should always be on God.
 
Odd expression,giving things up, when, after all, you are simply, gladly gaining all, all that is worth anything… So really we give nothing up…we replace worthless things with good.

No.

It means detachment from relying on the things that are passing for the meaning of life.

Hobbies are wonderful! We all have different kinds of various gifts that we use to create and give joy to others. They can be whimsical (and clean), or very deep.

We can have a surprise birthday party for someone we love, and give joy to that person and all invited there.

We need to follow our Lord Jesus Christ by striving to live in the Presence of God at all times.

If our favorite antique vase breaks into many little pieces we hope to be able to just smile, sweep up the pieces and throw them away.

Whatever spiritual need we have can be given to us when we pray and open ourselves to God’s will for us.

He is the Alpha and the Omega.

May He be glorified forever by our surrender to Him!
 
We are all called to put God’s Will above our own will and above everything. Some are called to actually give up all their possessions etc in consecrated life, if that is God’s Will for them.
