How does one go about being an RCIA team member?

That’s one of those questions you would have to address to your pastor or RCIA team. Potentially there are many roles someone could play and they would all have different qualifications.

At the very least it’s important to be familiar with the rites themselves and the Church’s vision of RCIA. Your parish may have a copy you could borrow or you can purchase it here: litpress.org/Products/1593/Rite-of-Christian-Initiation-of-Adults-Study-Edition

Beyond that, what exactly interests you? A catechist should have a strong background in terms of what the Church teaches and have teaching skills. Someone who works with prayer or retreat aspects of RCIA should have a strong spiritual life. I’ve tried (unsuccessfully) to recruit someone to work exclusively with sponsors, encouraging, motivating, and assisting them – that requires people skills, creativity, and a good knowledge of the rites. Are you interested in working with children in RCIA or perhaps with inquirers? Again, different skills.

I’d suggest talking with whoever leads RCIA in your parish to find out what they need and how that combines with what you have to offer. And best wishes as you go forward with this – it’s a very rewarding ministry.

Talk to your priest.

This differs greatly from parish to parish.

I’m part of our RCIA team and it’s really a blessing to serve in that capacity and they are always looking for volunteers in our parish. It’s a big commitment but well worth it.

I went through RCIA in 1989, and I’d love to help the candidates going through their journey. Thanks for your information.

Basically a willing heart. Of course you’ll need to speak with your priest and RCIA director. One way is to volunteer to be a sponsor. Not all catechumens or candidates will have someone to act as a sponsor and often the RCIA team needs to help match a sponsor for an individual.

Same here. 👍

Thanks so much. I have to wait for my health to stabilize so that I can attend every weekend Mass. Until then, I could not be a reliable team member.

This may take a year’s time.

But it is something to look forward to, if, God willing, I am ever strong enough to carry out my responsibility.

Thank all of you so much. God bless you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut.
