How does one know who to pray to?

I was just reading about the Saint(s) of the Day. Blessed Maria Teresa Casini was beautified in 2015 because of a miracle of healing brain lesions and trauma of a 5 year old drowning victim in Youngstown, Ohio in 2003. My question is: How do people know who to pray to for the possible healing miracle to happen? A random Italian nun that died in the 1930’s? How do the parents know to pray to her? They weren’t praying to a saint for intercession.

I’ve always wondered this when I hear about someone being canonized because the miracle of a life being saved is attributed to the person that was prayed to for help. I hope this makes sense. Thank you! 🙂
 
People who are facing a severe difficulty and decide to pray to a certain Servant of God, Venerable person, or Beatified person exclusively in hopes of a miracle (as the prayer must be exclusive) generally already have a devotion to the person, or are in contact with someone else who has such a devotion. Where the person is a religious, often their cause is being promoted by the person’s religious order. Casini’s order is active in the USA, so my guess is that the parents of this 5-year-old knew a member of the order and thus got involved in the cause of Bl. Maria Casini. I doubt it was “random”.

Many of us have a person, or a small group of people, on the path to canonization, whose cause we regularly pray for. I have such people whose causes I pray for every day. They are not all from my country of USA. If I were to suddenly need a healing miracle, it would be natural for me to turn to one of them for help.
