Hi,

We are planning for Lent and I am having such a hard time finding photos of other churches on line. Thought I would ask. How does your church decorate? Do they do anything special? Do they highlight the stations of the cross? Weave palms? Please share.

In general flowers are prohibited on the altar during Lent. Our patron saint’s feast day falls during Lent so on the day that we celebrate his feast day, we do put out some flowers. I don’t have any pictures, but near the altar, we placed a giant black cross and crown of thorns around it. Last year there was a purple cloth wrapped around it (Lenten colors). At the base of the cross, there were rocks and a board made to resemble a giant rock with a Lenten message on it, a quote from Scripture.
On Palm Sunday, the purple cloth was replaced with a red cloth and the message is changed to say Hosanna in the highest. I don’t remember the exact quote from Scripture. There are palms placed on the altar for the celebration on Palm Sunday. All of this is gone by Holy Thursday.

We don’t highlight the stations of the cross, but every Friday during Lent, we celebrate the Stations of the Cross as the priest and altar servers walk from station to station carrying a cross.

I can’t speak for Lent as it has been awhile since I’ve regularly attended Mass. But the Catholic parish I last attended had the most beautiful, colorful altar I had ever seen on Easter in my life. I still regret not taking a picture of it as many were doing before the Mass and after. There were many many colorful flowers. White lilies but with many bright, colorful plants as well. Pink mums I know. Yellow flowers. Bright greens if I remember correctly. Just beautiful and very colorful and spring-like. You can imagine how it must have been since it still stands out to me. Good luck as you plan for your parish.

For Easter, we have a very large wood cross, and a very large flowering “dogwood tree” on one side of the church as well as rows and rows of white lilies. I finally realized the tree was actually a real tree once, but the flowers are now silk! It is very beautiful!

During Lent, no flowers in the Sanctuary. Palm Sunday the Altar is dressed with only palms. Holy Thursday after the Mass of the Eucharist the Church is bear of any decorations till the Easter Vigil Mass. Easter Vigil Mass the Sanctuary & Tabernacle area is dressed with a beautiful foral arrangement.

During lent no flowers in church and statues are covered in purple material.

Easter Sunday sees a profusion of Easter lilies and little girls in beautiful dresses and Easter hats!😃

In our parish the crucifix and statues are covered in purple veils from the Fifth Sunday of Lent until the Easter Vigil. (The crucifixes are uncovered on Good Friday.)

Yes!!! In my diocese I don’t see a lot of parishes doing this. We veil our crosses too, beginning on the 5th Sunday of Lent.
