How effective has NFP been for you?

Since there’s been some recent talk about NFP, I’m curious just how effective it is for those who use it

Hubby and I have been practicing the sympto-thermal method of NFP for about a year and a half. I am pregnant right now but it was not because of a “failure”. We took a risk during a potentially fertile time and were open to the result. We weren’t exactly “planning” to get pregnant, but it wasn’t an accident either. With NFP it is often like that. It is more of a way to track fertility to make you aware of how your cycles work. How you use that info is up to you.

Honestly, I don’t think that NFP can fail. If the method is being used properly and one gets pregnant when it shouldn’t have been scientifically possible then I think it’s God’s will.

My husband and I used the Creighton model of NFP. If done correctly it is as effective, if not more effective, than the pill. Just as with the pill, there is a 1% chance that you can become pregnant. Once, my husband and I were that 1%…none of our NFP friends, NFP doctor, or NFP manager could figure out why we got pregnant. Unfortunately, that pregnancy ended in miscarriage. Afterwards, NFP worked beautifully for us. We now have a 3 month old on our household that was a result of US failing the NFP method, not the other way around…one of those moments where we knew it was probably a fertile time, but we ignored the signs and well…we now have a little miracle sleeping in the next room!

Highly recommend NFP…not only did it help to uncover problems I was having physically, it improved our marriage more than we could have imagined! 😃 😃

Several of our children are a result of knowing we were taking a chance 😃 but we do have a pair of twins who were conceived impossibly early in my cycle (and yes, I was using all the other signs, too) when I should have been unable to get pregnant. If this is a ‘failure,’ however, I don’t mind! 😉

Actually, I did respond to the first, but we don’t practice it “perfectly” as in, I no longer actually chart. My temps were all over the charts all month long (bought two new thermometers, a digital and a regular one thinking it was a glitch in the digital one I was using). I also take daily, year round, an antihistamine which makes the mucus signs hard to read as well. Anyway, we have not conceived for the last 10 years or so. Sadly before that we used a condom - my husband is not Catholic and it took me about 9 years to convince him it would be better if we practiced NFP.

DH and I have been using NFP (Creighton method) for 8 yrs. to avoid a pregnancy due to severe health problems I have. Hormones are out of the question since they do interfere with medications, cause blood clots, heart attacks, stroke, and even death. We wanted something that was safe, reliable, and morally acceptable.

We are very careful with charting and it has been 100% effective in our case. It does require abstinence, responsibility, and respect on both our parts but isn’t that what marriage is all about?

We are leaving our fertility in God’s hands and not w/the drug
compaines whose only motive is profit and not the well being of women.
