I recently left a job at university where any openly statet religious beliefs are seen as not suitable for employees. I now work as a shop assistant where almost everyone screams out their questionable life values. When is simply being quiet reaching a point of denying the faith? Today I talked with my co-worker about health care in our town. I asked how confident she was with the hospital here as I will have a tonsillar operation soon. The answer was “Oh, they did well with my abortions” and I was like 😮😮😮
The area is highly secular and radically right winged, just for you to know. I don´t know if I should keep silence or not…

Depends, sometimes speaking up only worsens situations. If you think that the person would listen to you, then you can tell them what you think. Just whatever you say, don’t push it, or be mean. Listen to what they say, stay calm, and try to refute any bad things if you can.
You really just have to take it case by case.

Well it makes me sick that they are openly racist, for example. But I do know it can cost my job If I spoke up. Still not a good feel as this is exactly the way to form societies of silence towards crime.

radically right winged
wait…right-winged, that’s the conservative party. I’m a political conservative myself. What are they saying that’s so bad. Besides racism. (which is bad.)

Many workplaces have rules against religious discussions. Even if yours doesn’t, it’s a smarter route to go. You’re not being paid to discuss politics and religion.

Same for political discussions, however, I get a feeling our original poster may not be in the US. Workplace laws in other countries differ.

Here, talk of nazism would in no doubt fall under a “hostile work environment” and the labor board would be there in a heartbeat!

The last school district that I worked for would not allow any religious discussions nor were you allowed to wear religious jewelry.

No, I´m not in the US. I have no other job option at the moment, as you see here:

Now my husband and me moved in a town in former eastern germany 7 hours via train away. Wonderful flat, jobs to finance the flat. But: the majority is close to neo-nazism. I walk defensively, we don’t leave the house often. we didn’t found jobs in our profession, and won’t for the future. So we work in the lowest health Care/ trade industry. No chance to meet people with similar backgrounds of educating or interests. alcololism and drug abuse are horribly high even in teenage groups. the major…

A german work issue court is stressful, not very effective and really not in my availibility at the moment. Won´t help that the police is radically invilved in far right parties here, too.

Arent there laws in Germany that prohibit public expressions of Nazi type beliefs? They dont have the first amendment protections Neo Nazis do in the US, as far as i know. If the boss is a sympathizer, though, i can see how it goes unchecked at work.

Of course there is law against it. But the town I live in voted today with high majority for an right extreme city parliament and my boss is an outspoken neonazi. Just as the store manager of the center, the shop owner next to the shop I work at and the workmates of my husband. It´s terrifying.
Look, I have a terminated work contract for a short time. No steady employment in sight. No other job opportunities. If I risk to quit, we would fall on the basic social aid network here, and that´s not funny even for well employed people with german background. I can´t risk to fall through all security nets because of discrimination.
