Im new to the Catholic faith and doctrines, so this may seem like a NOOB question 😃 but, when ( I dont want to say ā€œifā€) I join the Church and become a Catholic, what is the highest (for lack of a better word) rank can I become while married? I know I cannot become a priest which was a wish of mine a few years ago, so what can I do other than be a Priest?

A Deacon

Thanks for the Replies, so that makes me ask another new guy question. In short, what does the Deacon do?

I do not know if its really proper to refer to it as ā€œheight of Rankā€. One should only become a member of the clergy if they have that calling to be a member of the clergy and a desire to have a high rank is not a sign of that calling.

As for your question,

A deacon assists at liturgical functions, serves the people in ministry such as visiting the sick, is an ordinary distributor of the Eucharist, in the Latin Church the deacon can officiate weddings ( Maronite deacons can not do this). Deacon are servants to the people of God. Its a vocation of service. At Mass, the deacon wears an alb, a cincture, a stole that goes over the shoulder like a sash, and a dalmatic( a sleved vestment). Deacons can also wear the regular clerical garb. Mid thirties is the youngest one can become a permanent deacon. You have to have a stable family and consent of your wife(if you are married, there are some non married permanant deacons I imagine), a stable carrer, and I beleive complete a four year educational course designed by your Diocese or the Diocese in which you are going to become a Deacon.

I didnt mean anything by calling it a rank. Im in the military, so for me it was the easiest way to explain what I meant. I just knew I couldnt be married as a priest, but I know that I want to do priestly duties. If I could be married as a priest, I would be all over it:) . But like I said, I didnt mean anything by it, and im sorry if I offended anyone.

Its ok, I don’t think anyone was offended by it. I was not meaning to come off as being judgemental or anything so if I did I apologize. Just trying to clarify the nature of the clerical state. Thank you for your military service.

Other questions that might be relevant:

It is my understanding that you have to be at least 35 years old.

Is this correct?

And…do you receive a salary and what is the range?

Actually, if you are in one of the Eastern branches of Catholicism, you could become a married priest. Most Eastern branches permit this, but you can’t advance to any higher position, such as bishop (although I suppose in theory there’s nothing preventing the election of a married priest to the position of pope, however unlikely that would be).

Yes you have to be at least 36 I believe. And no, you do not receive a salary unless you are working in the parish in another capacity such as business manager or DRE. The Diaconate is not a paid postion although some pastors may give you a small (very very small) stipend for doing a wedding or baptism.

Im glad Im getting all this information, you all really helped to answer my question thanks. as for a salary, its not about money to me, thats why I didnt mind becoming a priest, or monk. I just really like helping people spiritually, physically, and education wise.
