How important is personality?

I am an ISFP and I’m not sure what my husband is. I can tell you that the friend I have the most conflict with is an ENTJ, aka basically my opposite. We’re good friends but we fight. all. the. TIME. Our mutual friends joke that we are like an old married couple (or a couple of three year olds), but I think we’d kill each other if we were locked alone in a room for a few days. Don’t let a personality test make or break your relationship, but it is important to see whether or not you and your partner have any huge personality clashes.

Healthy communication is also important, probably more important, and really will make or break your relationship.

@ cat. I’m on my phone so I’m not going to go into exhaustive detail about the types. You can use the little quiz as a reference and read all the descriptions on there.

I’m not an expert at all on this topic, in fact I’m pretty much a newbie, but no one who replied to this thread has any idea what they’re talking about.

Secondly I think I’m being misunderstood per usual. I’m not suggesting a personality test is the standard to use for dating or seeking a mate.

I am saying that individuals have personalities that generally fall into one of the 16 personality types. Our minds are wired a certain way that naturally prefer one function over the other.

For an overly simplified example, there are introverts and extroverts in the world, right? Some people derive their energy internally and have deeper inner worlds, while others get their energy externally; they’re generally stimulated by the external world and constant socializing.

I’m more of intuitive type person than a sensor type. I tend to look for patterns, think about the future, see the big picture, use a lot of metaphors, always in my head, and rely more on my ‘six sense’. I naturally prefer that over using my 5 senses…because of this I usually relate more to other intuitive types and sometime have difficulty communicating with sensors.

That was overly oversimplified and it is much more complicated than that, but I hope it was coherent enough for you.

You just demonstrated why personality is so important in a romantic relationship. I bet you couldn’t marry your ENTJ friend could you? 😃

My ex girlfriend is an ESFP, I’m an INTP. It just couldn’t work out long-term because our differences in perception and communication.

People have met, mated and had children for decamillenniums before there were personality tests. I for one would not bother with them.

There were still personalities, though. And, actually, basic personality types — not MBTI but Hippocrates’s four temperaments — go back to 5th century BC.

B’sides, marriages were arranged, there was no no-lifing online, people actually talked to each other and stopped to think about things. Matchmakers probably looked for compatible personalities.

Now, in the words of an expert witness before the Roman Rota, there is no such thing as absolute incompatibility. However, personalities make it easier or more difficult to connect, depending on the setup. I don’t think they come down to an individualised list of flaws. In any case, there’d need to be a list of virtues (developed to varying levels, not uniform across the board, just like the flaws), and there are different callings in life. Finally, somatic factors (general make-up of someone’s system, or medical conditions) can affect one’s behaviour and even thinking.

It definitely is not as easy as some linear progression on the line from zero to hero.

I get a different score every time. I’m not sure there exists any single type among the sixteen which I haven’t got in a test at some point in the last dozen years.

God said “I formed you in your mother’s womb, I knew you the hairs on your head are counted”

What is God’s is His and only His. For you to put a human spin on somebody is not of God.

Hmmm? Nothing wrong with research into people, their bodies, minds and whatnot.

You can’t learn much about someone’s body except in the most crass, superficial way, unless you are their MD.

The mind doesn’t even yield its secrets that easily. And if you think the mind, or it’s public surface, the personality, can be reduced to a string of four letters, you are kidding yourself.

this thread should be deleted. It is a disaster.

Different planets.

Does anyone see the irony in this thread? Like…real irony.

Did anyone immediately notice my grammatical errors but not care?

Is anyone else amused by the embarrassing arrogance on display in thread?

Is anyone not offended by my existential nihilism?

If you silently nodded yes at all of these things, then I like you…I like you…and I feel so bohemian like you.

For the record: Ti>Ne>Si>Fe. That is my types cognitive function stack.

I’m an INTP…I don’t mix well with those authoritarian SJ types 🙂

I love INFJs. My girlfriend is one but she can be pretty S-like at times.
What do you think about us INTJs?

Keep it in perspective. These string of four letters, as you put it, were never meant to define and/ or characterize a person fully. They are just meant to be rough guides.

I am an INFP, one of the rarest types. Definitely too sensitive for this world at times. I would say ISTJs or ESTJs find the working world easier anyhow.

Sure it can. Mine seems to be “DERP”. :whacky:

I do not believe the Myers-Briggs test to be scientifically valid. Nor the Color Personality test – I forget what they call it. I forget if I was orange or green. But we had to take it at work, and were supposed to relate to one another based on our color. Our supervisor wanted us to wear our colors on our badges.
Yikes. I totally refused to do it. Better if we relate to one another based on our whole personality, IMO. Get your flim-flam out of my brain.
