There have been many threads on this forum where “reason”, “science”, etc are invoked.

So, how is it that one animal among others is capable of a “truth” relationship to the world?

Or, to put it another way, how is it that the world is “intelligible” and that there are some among us who can access this “intelligibility”.

This is a great mystery, at least to me.

“Science” (including “cognitive science”) is hard pressed to explain its own possibility.

Any comments?

If you’re looking for a Catholic perspective, it’s obvious- because God willed it so. He set us apart from the other animals and gave us the gift of reason to understand the universe, but not (yet, at least) to the degree of understanding all of it. I would say existence is truth, so truth obviously exists.

From a material positivists standpoint it is a real puzzler; from a Thomistic, Neoplatonistic, or Aristotelian standpoint it is simple. I recommend Edward Feser’s book entitled: The Last Superstition it covers these points in the process of proving the existence of God.
P.S. Science can’t explain itself because the question is not scientific, but philosophical.
