Hello!

My father recently passed away. He died when a dump truck ran over him while he was on his way to the office on Christmas day, December 25, 2013. He was able to go to confession but a neighbor of ours dreamed of my father that he was in this smoky place. I believe he’s in pugatory but I don’t know how long I must pray for him. Please help me.How long should I pray for him?

You can easily pray for him for the rest of your life. Just present his name before God and ask that he be shown mercy and granted entrance into the heavenly kingdom as part of your daily prayers.

Yes, pray for him. Often and always. There is no prescribed amount of time other than the Bibles mandate to Pray without ceasing.

Don’t drive yourself crazy , but in the course of your prayers remember him and all souls in purgation.

We never stop praying for those we love. We believe that love is stronger than death. Love visits the person. Pray for him always. Have Masses offered for his intentions and attend those Masses. Remember him especially on his birthday, Father’s Day, anniversary of death, All Soul’s Day, and your own birthday. Fast or perform some other sacrifice in expression of love for him. Light a candle. The theory behind vigil candles is that it represents our prayers for the time it is lit. For ourselves, too, we receive special graces for visiting and praying for the deceased at a grave site. Please accept my deepest sympathy in the passing of your father. I will keep him and his family in prayer.

I still pray for my father’s soul. He died 2 years ago.

I also pray for my mother’s. She died almost 3 years ago.

Like everyone has said, I will pray for them, forever.

Pray for your father also at Christmas. You have my sincere condolences. My mother died on Dec. 25, 1991. It hasn’t ruined Christmas for me. On the contrary, Christmas feels more powerful to me as I ponder the first Christmas, God’s gift to us, and our hope in everlasting life. I pray for your father’s soul, and for peace for you and all his family.

Pray for him for the rest of your life. It is customary to have a Mass offered on the behalf of departed loved ones on the anniversary of their death. I am sorry for your loss.

Traditionally (at least in my family), prayers (such as the Rosary) are offered daily (for the soul of the deceased) for 40 days (from the date of death). On the 9th and 40th days, typically a Mass is offered for the soul of the deceased as well. Afterwards, it is customary to have a Mass offered for the deceased on the anniversary of both birth and death.
