How many Baptist churches

I was oberving that there where about three or four Baptist churches on the main drag of my rather small town. As I was never Baptist, nor knew anyone in any real way who was Baptist, I do not know if this is a just an odd happening. Are there usually this many Baptist churches in a single town? Are they run by the same overarching Church Goverment or are they just using the title “Baptist”? If they are diffrent indepndent church organizations what are the diffrences that cause there to be that many in a small town?

No real central government, though they may belong to a collection of like-minded churches. They may all differ on some issue or it could be political. I used to work in a town where the two largest Baptist churchs, separate by only one turn and one mile of road, were one larger church 15 years ago or so. They had them a scism. Seems like one group got mad at the pastor and they got him fired. He took about 60% of the people with him and started him a new church. This happens more than people want to admit.

In one stretch, for about 1.5 to 2 miles, there are seven churches, at least four of them Baptist, and two actually share a parking lot that is “all that separates them”, logistically speaking.
