No one has ever told me that. But I did hear someone one year who saw me with ashes on my forehead whisper to their coworker, “What’s that?” The coworker looked and said, “She’s Catholic. It’s Ash Wednesday.”
And Mama, before she converted, used to see Catholic schoolmates come into class after Mass with their ashes. She always felt like telling them they had dirt on their foreheads. But she didn’t want to embarrass them about having that dirt on them. Only years later did she learn about Ash Wednesday.
No one mentioned a smudge, but one person said " You think the priest made the cross on your forehead big enough’ It was a tad big. that was ok. God Bless::
