Does anyone know if the Church keeps statistics on converts who become priests?

It might be hard to keep the numbers meaningful. A person who converts with his parents might not be as committed as an adult who converts on his own. But, of course, many adult converts are married when they join (as was I) and are unable to even consider Orders.

And, a related question: Does anyone know if any Bishops are converts?

I doubt they keep stats on it, but a great number of saints and martyrs are known to be converts… so you might have a data point from which to begin there.

Out of curiosity, why do you ask?

My bishop is a convert. He was a lawyer and in the military previous to becoming Catholic and then becoming a priest. My dad is also a convert. I also have a friend who’s been in seminary for a year now who converted to the faith in college.

I doubt there are any statistics on it. Offhand, I can think of a number of priests who are converts, but I’d have to think a bit longer on the question of bishops.

Fr. Donald Calloway is one such priest. He’s got an amazing conversion story.

The first one that pops into my mind was Cardinal Newman.

I’m guessing it’s a pretty long list.

It seems over the last several years there have been several Episcopal Priests that have converted to Catholicism (some married some not.)

The bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Lansing, MI (Carl Mengeling) is a convert from Lutheranism…
