How many sins are usually confessed in a Saturday Sacrament of Reconciliation?

Or how long does one confession usually take? I just want to determine whether I would go to a Saturday confession or set up an appointment for a longer one.

Hello,

I think there is no “usual.” You can run through hundreds of sins in a minute, or you can give all details on only one and have that take a minute, too.

I suggest going early and being the first in line and say all you need to say… but basically let the confessor direct the conversation where he thinks it needs to go, for as long as he thinks it needs to take.

There is no real answer to this, but if you haven’t been to Confession in many years and have many sins to confess, it probably would be better to make an appointment with the priest. Some parishes only have an hour for Sat. Confession, and if yours is going to be a long one, there might not be time for everyone before Mass begins or the priest has to leave for an appointment. This has happened to me.

I would guess the average person takes 5 - 10 minutes. But it depends to a very great extent on the people confessing. I have been behind some people who take 20 or 30 minutes. If someone has a great need of counseling or direction, the priest is not going to rush them out.

Just judging by how fast the lines move, I would guess that the average confession at our parish, whether on weekdays or Saturdays takes about 2 1/2 minutes. (I can confess a lot of sins in 60 seconds.)

From what I have observed, seemed like an average of 3 minutes per person (some more, some less) during a time when there was a line of people. At times or parishes when there was no line it seemed like people were in there longer.

You should be able to do it in less than 10 minutes. Saturday confession is usually just an hour long and one person should not take up all of the priest’s time. If you haven’t been for a long time, have questions or need counseling, then it would be better for everyone if you made an appointment.

I usually confess 8-12 sins in about 2 minutes so I take up about 4 minutes in the confessional each week, unless the priest is particularly generous with his advice, then it goes to 5 minutes.

When I first returned to the Church, I made sure to be last in line, so as not to hold anyone up, and was able to go at a time that there was no Mass afterwards. Plus, I get emotional, so that helped ease that anxiety about people seeing me with tears running down my face.

It almost sounds like you haven’t been to confession for a long time…or ever. If that is the case, I would suggest that you make an appointment with a priest so that you can not only receive absolution in the Sacrament of Reconcilliation – but also receive spiritual direction (which often doesn’t happen in the confessional due to time constraints).
