I am reading a book that contains a suggested three year cycle of scripture readings for use in worship. I do not think it is the same as the Catholic cycle, but I’m not sure. This book lists readings for nine Sundays between January 6(Epiphany) and Ash Wednesday. I can only count five Sundays between the two. Could there be nine Sundays, or is this book incorrect?

Hmmm…the problem may be that Ash Wednesday is moveable – its date is dependent upon the date of Easter which is itself moveable.

And also on whether you are on the Orthodox calendar or the Catholic.

many mainline Protestant denominations have adopted the Revised Lectionary with its 3-year cycle of Sunday readings. There can be up to 9 Sundays between Epiphany and First Sunday of Lent, just depends on when Easter falls, so therefore when Ash Wednesday falls, also whether Epiphany is celebrated on the day, Jan. 6, or the Sunday (Jan. 2 this year).
