Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Here is the 4th installment of the presentation on “How Mary our Mother lived the Our Father”, as she heard the words taught by Jesus. There are two installments left, and God willing, I’ll try to post at least one on Monday. I have some commitments for Monday and Tuesday so I might not get the conclusion posted until Wednesday. We’ll see. Hope it has been a blessing for you as it was for me, in receiving the grace to do it.
…Mary listened and she learned from God’s Word by the power of the Holy Spirit. When Mary heard the words “Our Father”, I wondered especially about the word “our”. The Catechism tells us the “Our Father” reveals us to ourselves at the same time as it reveals the Father to us.

Perhaps Mary was beginning to hear from the Holy Spirit, more about her invitation from Jesus when she and Joseph found the Child in the temple. In hearing “Our Father”, Mary may have begun to hear Jesus’ words, “My Father’s House” in a new way — that is: Jesus’ words “Our Father” revealed a new “Holy Family” of disciples who would be brothers and sisters of Jesus. The Our Father is given in Chapter 6 of Matthew’s Gospel, but further on in chapter 12, Jesus, was speaking to the people, and his mother and brothers stood outside asking to speak to Him. Jesus replied, to the man who told him, “Who is my mother and my brothers? And stretching out his hand toward His disciples He (Jesus) said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! for whoever does the will of My Father is brother and sister and mother to Me.” Mary perhaps was just beginning to see her vocation as Mother of God expand to include all those who do the will of God. The word “our” is a gratuitous gift of God signifying we belong to Him, it is an invitation to all who listen and do the Truth Jesus teaches them — an invitation into a new relationship with God through faith in His Son. (CCC 2792) The word “our” at the beginning of of the Lord’s prayer is like the “us” of the last four petitions - excluding no one.

The Catechism (2790) teaches: “There is only one God, and He is recognized by those who through faith in His only Son are reborn in Him by water and the Holy Spirit. The Church is this new communion of God and men. …In praying “our” Father, each of the baptized is praying in this communion: “The company of those who believed were of one heart and soul.”… (Acts 4:32)
