How much does Jesus command Christians to give to the poor? How can weas Christians live a comfortable life when there are people who need shelter and food?

I have a real problem with this. I live in New Orleans and there are so many homeless people that it hurts my heart to see them on the streets. I feel like I should give money to every one of them. My husband and I both work and we pretty much just make ends meet so giving to all of these people is not possible. I do volunteer at the local Mary Joseph retirement home three nights a week so maybe that is a help of sorts but I still feel guilty when I pass one of the homeless people on the street. I need to start including them in my prayers more often.

Give what you can afford.

Some people are homeless because they are unemployed or lack the resources to support themselves and other people squander their money on booze and drugs. Not many people can discern why. I am often disenfranchised with Catholics that think all people are homeless because they are mentaly ill or have some kind of social desease. If I was much worse off, Id be homeless. I am livingt in my grandmas house thanks to her I have a home but the government taxs me $2000 a year to live in basically what I call my own house.

I am poor and I can afford to give $1. People act like $1 is nothing. If I see a homeless person and I discern they are not an Alchoholic. I give them some change. If a couple of people give them change they can buy a hamburger. I will minister to a person. God Loves you, God Bless you. Whatever you do for the least of us, you do for me. THis is for Food.

I think a good idea might be to go to McDonalds and buy McDonalds coupons. That way if you give out coupons to them you can be pretty sure that they are spending it on food and not on booze or drugs.
