I would love to do more, but I probably only average about 45 minutes a day in Catholic reading. Some days it’s a couple of hours, and others I just don’t have the time/energy. It’s not much, but I have been able to work my way through a number of very good books (currently Frank Sheed’s “Theology and Sanity”).

It goes in spurts.

I’m an avid reader. I’ll go months reading nothing but catholic books (apologetics etc). Then I’ll get burned out and have to read fiction for awhile.

I have a non-Catholic boss who is cautiously looking at Catholicism. He used to be anti-Catholic but after overhearing some conversations I was having with another Catholic, he became interested.

I read up on stuff that might penetrate his ‘force-field’ and pass it on for his information.

It keeps me on my toes so to speak.

I alternate between Catholic and secular. Right now it is secular.

I find it nearly impossible to read they way I used to 3-4 mysteries a week, a couple of history books, numerous news magazines, a couple of newspapers, local and NYT. I also find it nearly impossible to get any enjoyment or relaxation out of TV anymore, or to listen to stations I used to love-classic rock oldies, NPR.

I get the news headlines from the internet, Catholicexchange.com and tcrnews2.com, both of which have links to world, national, Catholic sites. then spend no more than an hour on the forums (discipline, discipline).

I do a lot of “churchy” reading because of my job, so for my own personal reading I take my cue from the Holy Rule and read one spiritual book at a time, and may take weeks or months to finish it because that book is read by lectio divina, slowly and meditatively.

I never seem to have the time to read anymore. I work like a dog, get home… and don’t feel like doing anything. Other times, I snap out of it, and I’m on fire. I just need to calm down, work on my priorities, and start reading more.

I’m a firm believer in “if you don’t use it, you lose it”. I think everyone (no matter what their state in life) should always read more! But I let myself get way too distracted too often. For instance… it took me about 15 minutes to write this post, while checking my e-mail, answering a phone call, getting up for a snack… sigh… I’m pathetic sometimes… 😉
