Catholics are only required to confess their mortal sins once a year. The Church encourages more frequent confession. Most commonly, once per month is suggested. Even young children should go to confession on a regular basis so that it will become an ingrained lifelong habit. Once per month seems reasonable, but you could ask your pastor for another recommendation if that seems unworkable.
